The Stables

Conversion of existing grade II Edwardian listed stables and coaching houses into a 5,600 sq. ft. Undertaken for Yeates Design + Architecture.

A 5 bedroom family house with swimming pool, cinema and gym, The Stables was on English Heritage’s list of 100 most endangered structures. The building was so dilapidated that it was in a state of partial collapse. For many years it had been used as a builders yard.

The conversion of the building into a new dwelling involved detailed negotiation with English Heritage. The design included the careful renovation and partial rebuilding of the existing structure and the introduction of modern glass and steel additions to minimise the impact of the conversion on the historic style of the building. What was once a dark and uninviting property is now a bright, open space, where walls of glass allow natural light to flow throughout.

The stables has featured in 25 Beautiful Homes magazine and the front page of The Independent property section.
